My mind returned to Baker Street, and I opened my eyes to find Mycroft regarding me with an indulgent smile.

“There you have it, Bhaiya,” I told him. “The full story, served once again, for your pleasure. Would you like me to regale you with tales of my journey to Lhasa as well?”

Mycroft rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “I never asked before, but I have been curious. Did you investigate the boy’s father, Sherlock?”

I shook my head. “I promised I would not.”

Mycroft sniffed disdainfully. “But you already know, do you not? The boy has his father’s eyes. Have you told your friend yet?”

“There is no evidence,” I said flatly.

“You will find more than enough only if you would look,” my brother retorted. “Rajeshwari certainly has some.”

I stared at him. “She knew?” Even as I said the words, I realised I should have known that she did. Why else would she panic when she thought I had uncovered the identity of the boy’s father?

“Of course. I taught her well.”

“Is that why you agreed to be their godfather?” I asked. “Or do you actually feel some form of affection for the madwoman?”

Mycroft’s eyes twinkled. “Who knows” He turned serious. “You really should consider informing your friend, Sherlock.”

“I refuse to cause him any more grief than I already have. He would be racked with guilt at the thought that he had abandoned his child inadvertently.”

Mycroft stood up with a groan. “Do give it some thought,” he said. “My offer to bring him to London still stands.”

I was sorely tempted. It would be good to see Jyoti again. I wondered what he looked like now.

“Think about it Sherlock,” Mycroft cajoled. “I could arrange for you to meet him – or both of them – on the Continent as well. It would do you good.”

I blinked. It was rather unusual behaviour for my brother.

“Why are you so concerned?” I asked him.

Mycroft sighed. I stared at him.

“Fine,” I said finally. “I do need to be back in Baker Street before Watson returns, though.”

“Excellent,” Mycroft said. “Pack your bags while I request a cab.”

My amazed expression amused my brother greatly. When his generous chins and middle stopped shaking with laughter, he took pity on me and said kindly, “Jyoti and Abhi are in Paris, Sherlock. Abhi completed his education much sooner than expected, and they intend to send Jyoti to college in Europe as well. The boy wishes to be a doctor.”

An unfamiliar but not unpleasant sensation arose in my gut. If the boy studied in Europe, I ought to be able to meet him at least once or twice in a year. Perhaps I could influence him slightly . . . or stroke his curiosity about his sire. Perhaps . . . .

“Stop wool-gathering, Sherlock, and gather your belongings instead,” Mycroft boomed.

I obeyed wordlessly, looking forward to the reunion.
